About the Artist: Katherine Little

Katherine Little was born in Emporia Kansas in 1948, although a great part of her life has been spent in the Seattle/Tacoma area and Alaska. She lived in Alaska for a brief time as a child and won her first award in art in the 2nd grade through the City of Anchorage Fire Department. She has lived in Alaska for over 20 years and currently resides in Homer, Alaska.

The Little Gallery and Studio can be found at 1500 East End Road. Appointments: 907-226-3376 or support@artistklittle.com.

Katherine is past member of the ‘Piedmont Group’ in Mat Su Valley and past President and Treasurer of the ‘Alaska Watercolor Society’. She is presently a member of the National Water Color Society of America, the Alaska Watercolor Society and the Kachemak Bay Watercolor Society in Alaska.

Katherine has trained with many successful artists including: Bette Ridgeway, Pat Soucie, Mary Todd Beam, Jean Grastorf, Carole Barnes, Katherine Chang Liu, Skip Lawrence, Christoper Schink, Fran Larson, Gerald Brommer, & Henry Wo Yue-Kee most of whom are internationally recognized, and members of the National Watercolor Society and American Watercolor Society.

Katherine has education in fine art and commercial art. Throughout the 1970"s and 1980"s she was employed as a graphic designer and illustrator for Weyerhaeuser and Vitro Architecture and Engineering Corporations, in Washington State. Katherine received an Associate of Technical Arts Degree from Tacoma Community College, Washington and later attended the University of Alaska, Anchorage.

POURED PAINTINGS
Katherine has developed a process of pouring acrylic paint onto large white canvas which is draped on supports. This allows gravity to play it’s part in the painting process as the color flows on a journey across the white surface. As the paint flows, she manipulates it as it traverses, intersects and intermingles with previous color pours. These paintings are lyrical, large and lively, with glorious color depicting abstracted landscapes and flowers.

PAINTED POLYURETHANE SCULPTURE
Technologically advanced materials on the market today are becoming an important part of Katherine’s work. She has been producing sculptured art works by spraying three-dimensional objects using a heated polyurethane liquid. This substance is sprayed on the surface and drys solid and is virtually indestructible. By applying acrylic and enamel paint these pieces come alive with shimmering color. The result is exciting to see as these unique works resemble three-dimensional shapes depicting organic objects and seemingly active, living images from nature.

Katherine’s 62" X 48" painting ‘Paradise Found’ took the 2005, Anchorage Museum of History and Art Gala, People’s Choice Award. She was also honored in 2006 and 2007 when her paintings ‘Blue Poppy’ and ‘Upstart’ were displayed and sold in the live auction for that same annual museum fund raiser. Previously, the ‘Blue Poppy’ image was used on the invitations for that occasion. ‘Upstart’ was also used as the image for a poster and invitation for the Anchorage Museum, ‘Beaujolais Nouveau & Wines of California’, Members Dinner Benefit on November 17, 2006.
